One week away…

It’s been awhile since I’ve done an event. I have to say, I’ve missed them. They are a lot of fun, on both sides of the table. I love talking to people who stop by the table, whether they want to talk about my books, the magic of idea crafting, or the art of writing itself. I also really enjoy my boothmates. An event is really only as much fun as the people you surround yourself with and this time around, I’m pulling out all the stops.

September 13, in the Kerrytown district of Ann Arbor is the 13th annual Kerrytown Bookfest. Not only will I be there, but I will have books, and merchandise, and ye olde Bad Drawings sketch pad. I’ll also be sharing my space with fellow author J. Thomas-Like, who will also be offering her wonderful words to the masses. And right next door, I’m proud to say we’ll be neighboring with Kate of ChicalooKate – it promises to be some awesome fun YOU should be a part of!

I don’t want to ruin all the surprises, but I will say that this is the first time you will be able to purchase Empty Hallways and House of Thirteen notebooks and magnets!

House of Thirteen

House of Thirteen, coming very very soon.

House of Thirteen is in the hands of the beta readers. This is both a milestone of success and a stomach of butterflies for me.

Getting this book to a point of release this book has been harrowing, arduous, and – at times – almost not worth the effort. But here it is, and I am very (terrified) excited to see what the beta readers have to say about it.

Depending on how much work they think I still have, I may be able to push up my release date – which would be a first, really. 😉

But right now, I can say with confidence that House of Thirteen will be out in the universe by Halloween. What happens to it then is anyone’s guess.

There is no way to fully communicate the sensations I am feeling about this. It is my second novel, and the start of a monumental adventure in itself. It is exactly what I set out to write when I started, yet nothing I expected and so much more than I could have hoped for.

I hope it will live up to expectations, because it has already exceeded my own.

A little over a month ago, my story Leave the Light On found its way to being published in the anthology Monster Attack along with a number of other horror stories. After much delay, pain and struggle with characters that had no desire to follow an attractive story arc (seriously, I think only two groups understand the burden of fictional beings that don’t listen to their creators: writers and the insane… I really hope I’m a writer) House of 13 is back on a very optimistic track and progressing toward a wonderful finish. I have decided to stop at the end of the current section and unwind the rest of the night with 51,000 words down on the page. Continue reading →

Buying into belief…

So this “Ice Bucket Challenge” thing is all the rage right now. I have a hard time believing with how everywhere it is that I didn’t know what it was just a couple days ago. It has gone from a silly game on YouTube and Facebook to actual awareness of the cause itself, at least in my case. That’s been three clockwork days for me: ignorance to action. If it has affected me as such, in so short a time, maybe it’s actually raising the awareness – and the dollars – it should. I hope it is. Continue reading →
